LYON Fence heights and deck permits in Calgary: the rules that catch people
Both fail underground, and both get refused above ground for the same reason: a number nobody checked.

Fences and decks are the two jobs homeowners most often assume need no paperwork. Sometimes that is true. The rules are short enough to read in two minutes, so read them before you buy lumber.
Calgary fence height: the three numbers
- Rear yard: maximum 2.0 m (6 ft 6 in)
- Front yard: maximum 1.2 m (4 ft)
- Inside a corner visibility triangle: maximum 0.75 m (2 ft 6 in)
In most situations a fence does not need a building permit. It does need a development permit if it exceeds those heights or otherwise does not meet the land use bylaw for your location. That corner visibility triangle is the one that catches people on corner lots, and it exists so drivers can see.
When a deck needs a building permit in Calgary
The threshold is height above grade, and it is lower than most people expect.
- No permit if the deck surface is 0.6 m (2 ft) or lower above grade at every point
- Permit required if it is higher than 0.6 m at any point
- Permit required for any covered deck, with a pergola or roof
- Permit required to rebuild, extend or add stairs to an existing deck over 0.6 m
A development permit is needed on top of that if the deck is at the front of the home, closer than 1.2 m to a side property line, closer than 6 m to a rear property line, or the property is in or within 6 m of a floodway.
Guard heights, and the gap that fails inspection
- Deck under 1.8 m high: guard must be 0.9 m (3 ft)
- Deck at or above 1.8 m: guard must be 1.07 m (3 ft 6 in)
- Maximum spacing between balusters: 100 mm (4 in)
Walkout decks have their own limit: in developed areas the maximum height is 1.5 m, except at walkout entries, where the deck must not exceed 0.3 m above the main floor level.
What happens underground
This is the whole reason a fence leans and a deck lifts after a few winters: not the boards, the posts. Posts and footings have to sit below the frost line, and in Calgary that is deeper than a weekend project usually goes.
If screw piles are used instead of poured footings, the City requires a professional engineer’s stamped drawings. That is worth asking about, because “we will put it on screw piles” is a sentence that sometimes comes without the engineering behind it.
The short version
Confirm the property line before anything goes in the ground. Check the height against your yard, not your neighbour’s. Set posts to depth. Everything expensive about a fence or a deck happens below the surface, where you cannot see it and cannot fix it cheaply later.
